The Face of Our Past

This collection of over 300 historical photographs of ordinary African American women is intended as a true representation of Black history and to counter long-prevailing images and stereotypes. Individually, the photographs show people in everyday situations--providing, like all good photographs, insight into the character of the subjects and into how life was lived in their time and place.
