A renowned French literary theorist and feminist, Cixous here collects essays on writing's relationship to the writing self, examining the work of Stendhal, Derrida, Balzac, Joyce, Rimbaud, Pushkin, and Clarice Lispector as well as investigating herself as autobiographer. While many of the concerns in the book are similar to those Cixous expresses elsewhere, she notably distances herself from some feminist concerns here, making it clear that she yearns to escape the trap of writing as a woman.
