While in vacation in Southern France, Michael Frame, a dealer of rare books, is shocked to see a ghost from his past: Anna Addison, a radical feminist Marxist with whom he helped execute a number of political bombings. He changed his name and disappeared into the dispiriting capitalist world he had once railed against; she continued with the cause, and supposedly died in a botched assault on a German embassy. Flashing back and forth between the present and the 1960s, Hari Kunzru sincerely and generously imagines the sentiments and sensations that led his characters into the morally ambiguous world of the radical left, and skillfully demonstrates how their dreams and loves were subtly sabotaged by belief.
